Twilight - written by Stephenie Meyer - tells the story between Bella and Edwards and the romance that budded between the two. This is no ordinary vampire story that you have read and will take you to a whole new level with a whole new outlook. The book is geared for young adults - but is so unique that even adults will find interest in it.

The story is told in first person from the perspective of Bella, so the reader only ever know what she knows, making Edward and his family a mystery that is slowly unravelled through out the book. Even by the end of the book I was still thirsting for more of the Cullen family back story - hopefully their characters might be developed further in future books. Bella herself is a well written and realistic character, shy and lacking in confidence, her sarcastic inner voice narrates the story for the reader.

Twilight is simply and yet beautifully written. The descriptions of Forks leave you feeling like you can almost smell the damp air and hear the rain falling on the roof. The romance between Edward and Bella is both touching and compelling. There is a melancholic feel to their impossible love, yet at the same time they both are unwilling to give up hope that their relationship is not doomed. The book reaches a fever pitch of excitement as the romance between Bella and Edward turns into a frantic race to stay alive.

Rowling dressed herself in a red and black gown as she accepted an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from one of the United States most prestigious colleges – Harvard University.

“We do not need magic to transform our world,” she said. “We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already.

Between the books and the movies J.K. Rowling has made millions of dollars. Now she is trying to protect her famous ‘Harry Potter’ books from Steven Vander Ark and his ‘Harry Potter’ encyclopedia. Rowling is bringing Ark to court stating that he has violated her copyrights.

Rowling is scheduled to testify Monday in a trial that is sure to generate huge interest among Harry Potter fans and the public. Her lawyer has arranged with the judge to have a private security guard for Rowling in the courtroom and for the author to spend breaks in the seclusion of a jury room away from any die-hard Potter fans in attendance. The trial comes eight months after Rowling published her seventh and final book in the widely popular Harry Potter series. The books have been published in 64 languages, sold more than 400 million copies and spawned a film franchise that has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

Rowling brought the lawsuit last year against Vander Ark’s publisher, RDR Books, to stop publication of the “Harry Potter Lexicon.” Rowling is actually a big fan of the Harry Potter Lexicon Web site that Vander Ark runs. But she draws the line when it comes to publishing the book and charging $24.95. She also says it fails to include any of the commentary and discussion that enrich the Web site and calls it “nothing more than a rearrangement” of her own material. One of her lawyers, Dan Shallman, on Friday told Judge Robert P. Patterson, who will hear the trial without a jury, that Rowling “feels like her words were stolen.”

He said the author felt so personally violated that she made her own comparisons between her seven best-selling novels and the lexicon and was ready to testify about the similarities in dozens of instances. David Saul Hammer, a lawyer for RDR Books, which plans to sell the lexicon, said the publisher will not challenge the claim by Rowling that much of the material in the lexicon infringed her copyrights. But the judge will decide whether the use of the material by the small Muskegon, Mich., publisher was legal because it was used for some greater purpose, such as a scholarly pursuit.

In court papers filed prior to the trial, Rowling said she was “deeply troubled” by the book. “If RDR’s position is accepted, it will undoubtedly have a significant, negative impact on the freedoms enjoyed by genuine fans on the Internet,” she said. “Authors everywhere will be forced to protect their creations much more rigorously, which could mean denying well-meaning fans permission to pursue legitimate creative activities.”
In court papers, Vander Ark, 50, said he was a teacher and school librarian in Byron Center, Mich., before recently moving to London to begin a career as a writer.

He said he joined an adult online discussion group devoted to the books in 1999 before launching his own Web site as a hobby a year later. Since then, neither Rowling nor her publisher had ever complained about anything on it, he said. In May 2004, he said, Rowling mentioned his Web site on her own, writing, “This is such a great site that I have been known to sneak into an Internet cafe while out writing and check a fact rather than go into a bookshop and buy a copy of Harry Potter (which is embarrassing). A web site for the dangerously obsessive; my natural home.”

The Web site attracts about 1.5 million page views per month and contributions from people all over the world, Vander Ark said. He said he initially declined proposals to convert the Web site into an encyclopedia, in part because he believed until last August that in book form, it would represent a copyright violation. After Rowling released the final chapter in the Harry Potter series that same month, Vander Ark was contacted by an RDR Books employee, who told him that publication of the lexicon would not violate copyright law, he said.

Still, to protect himself, Vander Ark said he insisted that RDR Books include a clause in his contract that the publisher would defend and pay any damages that might result from claims against him. He said it was decided that the lexicon would include sections from the Lexicon Web site that give descriptions and commentary on individual names, places, spells and creatures from Harry Potter stories. In his court statement, Vander Ark still sounds like a fan, saying the lexicon “enhances the pleasure of readers of the Potter novels, and deepens their appreciation of Ms. Rowling’s achievement.” But the affection no longer seems a shared experience. In court Friday, Hammer said Rowling’s lawyers did not want Vander Ark in the courtroom while Rowling testifies.

It seems that books are something that may be going out of style. Sure kids have to read them when they are in school – but most only do it because they have to. Many adults will admit that they don’t care to read books. Why read them when you can go watch the movie that they are based on?

Yet, there are still many adults out there who do love to read and try to make the time to do so. A study was performed to see just which book was the most popular among people. Most of the people agreed that the Bible was the most popular book for them to read.

It came in first in a Harris Poll of nearly 2,513 adults but the second choice in the survey was not as clear cut. “While the Bible is number one among each of the different demographic groups, there is a large difference in the number two favorite book,” Harris said in a statement announcing the results. Men chose J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” and women selected Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind” as their second-favorite book, according to the online poll.

But the second choice for 18- to 31-year-olds was J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, while 32- to 43-year-olds named Stephen King’s “The Stand” and Dan Brown’s “Angels and Demons.” Picks for second-favorite book also varied according to region. “Gone With the Wind” was number two in the southern and midwestern United States while easterners chose “The Lord of the Rings” and westerners opted for “The Stand.” Whites and Hispanics picked “Gone With the Wind” as their second-favorite book after the Bible, while African-Americans preferred “Angels and Demons.”

“Finally, they may not agree on candidates, but one thing that brings together partisans is their favorite book. For Republicans, Democrats and Independents, the top two books are the same — the Bible followed by “Gone With the Wind.” Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code,” “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, “Angels and Demons” by Dan Brown, “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand and “Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger rounded out the top 10 favorites.

Colin Harrison’s ‘The Finder’ is a thriller that will take you to the edge of your seat and back again. The book is full on intricate details of a place that you know – but have never truly ‘seen’ before. The plot is thick and it seems that Harrison uses a bit of his ‘poetry’ to enhance the twists and make them more real and alive for the readers.

The result is a grisly page turner of a novel that lacquers its cheap thrills with an upscale literary veneer, even as it leaves the reader with some memorably visceral snapshots of a nervous, profligate New York City, barreling headlong into the new millennium. Ray Grant, the hero of “The Finder,” like so many of the author’s characters, is a man haunted by his past: a former fireman, he was gravely injured in the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9/11 and in an effort to put that trauma behind him has spent years traveling to other disaster zones as a relief worker. He has since returned home to New York to tend to his ailing father, a former cop who is terminally ill.

Ray doesn’t like to talk a lot about his past, and he thought he’d found a happy match in Jin Li, a pretty young Chinese woman who is his equal in emotional reticence. Jin Li, it turns out, has a lot to hide. A supervisor for a company that cleans Midtown office buildings, she is actually an information thief who works for her wealthy brother Chen’s Shanghai-based company, which has been using the stolen data to make millions in the stock market.

Now, suddenly, someone at one of those corporations seems to have discovered what Jin Li is up to. After two of her employees are brutally murdered and she is nearly killed herself, Jin Li is on the run, and a worried Ray is hoping he can find her before her would-be assassins can. Harrison enlivens this very basic thriller premise with some acerbic portraits of the people involved in the scam. Most of the victims at Good Pharma and its big money backers, we soon learn, are even greedier and more unsavory than Chen and Jin Li, and their instruments of revenge are twisted, small-time killers who make Ralph Cifaretto in “The Sopranos” seem almost normal.

In recounting the characters’ nasty maneuverings, Harrison regales the reader with lots of intriguing details about tradecraft: how to make a deadly and virtually odorless cocktail; how to “lift” the price of a fast-moving stock temporarily by manipulating the international markets; how to smuggle encrypted computer disks safely into China. Harrison succeeds in giving us a chilling, high-speed roller coaster of a ride that doubles as a sardonic sightseeing tour of the seamier side of New York City.

“All the King’s Men” written by Robert Penn Warren is more than just a classic political novel. Warren’s tale of power and corruption in the Depression-era South is a sustained meditation on the unforeseen consequences of every human action, the vexing connectedness of all people and the possibility that there might be some sort of good in a sinful world.

Willie Stark, Warren’s lightly disguised version of Huey Long, the onetime Louisiana strongman/governor, begins as a genuine tribune of the people and ends as a murderous populist demagogue. Jack Burden is his press agent, who carries out the boss’s orders, first without objection, then in the face of his own increasingly troubled conscience.

When it comes to politics, you can clearly see it throughout the whole book. For Warren, that’s simply the arena most likely to prove that man is a fallen creature. Which it seems to do well in this story.

Rap star – Eminem – is working on a book of his own that his publisher describes as “every bit as raw and uncensored as the man himself.” His book – “The Way I Am” will be released this fall through Dutton Books. “It will be illustrated with never-before-seen photographs of Eminem’s home and life along with original drawings,” Dutton said in a statement.

The rapper’s spokesman, Dennis Dennehy, said the memoir “is still in the process of being written and edited.” The book was described as an intimate look inside the life of Eminem, who has sold tens of millions of records since he made his provocative debut in 1999. “Offering a window on the star’s private thoughts on everything from his music and the trials of fame to his love for his daughter, Hailie, this title is every bit as raw and uncensored as the man himself,” Dutton said.

The Grammy and Academy Award-winning rapper has published one other book, “Angry Blonde.” The 2002 work detailed his lyrics. Eminem has not released a new album since 2004’s “Encore,” and his representative said there’s no CD scheduled to be released from the rapper at this time.

‘The Golden Compass’ was written by Phillip Pullman – a graduate from Oxford who has written many great works in his time (‘Shadow in the North’, ‘The Tiger in the Well’). This is the first book in a fantasy series that has been dubbed as the next best thing since ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’. While others have been offended at the content of the book and have encouraged parents to keep their children from it.

Lyra Belacqua, a street-savvy and sassy little girl, takes the lead role. Raised and haphazardly educated by Oxford scholars, she has until now led a largely carefree and unconfined life. When her uncle, Lord Asriel, returns to Oxford from exploring in the North, he brings back word of strange events, mysterious Dust, and a photograph showing a city in the Aurora Borealis. His reports pique Lyra’s insatiable curiosity and set in motion the wheels of her fate.

Children begin to go missing, stolen by mysterious unseen “Gobblers,” and Lyra herself is taken away from Oxford to live with the attractive but cunning Mrs. Coulter. When Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon, discover that their new caretaker is herself behind the abductions of the missing children, they escape to the safety of the water-faring folk, the gyptians.

With them, Lyra and Pantalaimon will journey to the far North in an effort to rescue the stolen children and, if possible, exact vengeance. What they will find in the frozen North are some things horrifying, some achingly beautiful, and some truly awesome. Lyra’s journey becomes a life and death struggle that will end in her deciding whether or not to take the role Destiny has decreed for her.

While the language has been made easy reading for children the message behind it is far more in depth. The theme of the book is that absolute power corrupts absolutely – and in this book that absolute power is the ‘Church’. Pullman makes it clear that he does not trust any religion. He believes that religion is something that cannot be proved with science therefore it is not real. That religion is something that will suffocate the life out of you until there is no free will.

Pullman has stated that in these books he trying to teach children “to kill God” and that he wishes to use the books to “undermine the Christian religion”. There is no doubt that this new fantasy series will stir up much more debate in the coming future.

The father of Ronald Goldman is turning to the courts to put a stop to a file sharing web site that has been posting and giving out free downloads of O.J. Simpson’s new book, “If I Did It” – which is about the slaying of his son and Simpson’s ex-wife.

Fred Goldman, who has the rights to the best-selling book, claims he has lost at least $150,000 since the Swedish site The Pirate Bay made the book available for to the public for free. Although Goldman’s attorneys have sent a letter demanding the Web site’s operators stop posting the book, the defendants have indicated “they are not subject to the laws of the United States,” the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit seeks to recover profits from the “illegal publication” and suggests The Pirate Bay receive advertising money from such American companies as Wal-Mart, Target, Jamster and The Wall Street Journal. “It’s the wealth through the advertising” that allows the site to remain, said Goldman’s attorney, David Cook.

“Ron Goldman LLC will never be able to stop these pirates from posting that book online but they can do that in the poorhouse,” Cook said. Goldman won the rights to the book in his ongoing legal fight with Simpson, who was acquitted in a criminal trial of the 1994 murders of his son and friend Nicole Brown Simpson. After their families sued for wrongful death, a civil court jury found Simpson liable and ordered him to pay $33.5 million.

Simpson has paid little of the judgment, which has risen to about $39 million with interest, so Fred Goldman has been going after some of the former football star’s assets. He recently won the rights to the book, which was retitled “If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer” and became a New York Times best-seller. With a court having earmarked 90 percent of the book’s royalties for Goldman, he could eventually win a substantial sum.
